Abstract: The essay analyses the institutional architecture of the European Union, starting from the premise that the current historical situation makes a further advancement of the integration process indispensable. It is argued that, in light of the founding principles of the Union, a structural and ambitious revision of its institutional framework is desirable, capable of combining the necessary strategic pragmatism ‒ on the economic, military, and geopolitical matters ‒ with a complete federalisation of Europe. Only such an institutional leap would enable the Union to joint decision-making effectiveness with democratic legitimacy, thereby responding coherently to the challenges of the present and the near future.
