abstract: The ability to make choices, to direct one’s will towards a specific goal and to set a particular course for one’s life implies the possession of psychological and physical aptitudes that enable the individual to be fully autonomous, aware of the decisions taken following a thorough assessment and selection of the various options available. Sometimes, however, the personal and social circumstances a person may face require a model of support capable of alleviating the difficulties with which the individual is called upon to contend. What stands out, therefore, is the need to ensure the effective enjoyment of a person’s fundamental rights even when a situation of disadvantage arises, the contours of which may sometimes be clearly defined, and at other times more nuanced and complex. Thus, some twenty years ago, the institution of supported administration was established, aimed at developing a person’s potential through self-determination and dignity.
